Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my child needs an autism assessment?
You may consider an autism assessment if your child:
• Struggles with social interactions or making friends
• Has difficulty with communication or understanding unspoken rules
• Shows strong preferences for routines or has specific, intense interests
• Reacts strongly to sensory input (e.g., sound, texture, lights)
• Finds change or transitions difficult
Some children may also “mask” their traits at school, so early signs might show more clearly at home.
Can autism be diagnosed in toddlers or young children?
Yes. Autism can be reliably diagnosed from around age 2–3, though signs may appear earlier. Our assessments use developmentally appropriate tools and observations across home and educational settings to ensure an accurate picture.
What is included in a child or teen autism assessment?
Our autism assessment includes:
• Parent/caregiver developmental interview and questionnaire (MIGDAS-2)
• In-clinic sensory-based observation session (MIGDAS-2)
• Observation at kindergarten or school
• Teacher consultation
• Adaptive behaviour assessment (Vineland-3)
• Questionnaires on social and behavioural traits (SRS-2, Conners-CBRS, CARS-2)
• Optional cognitive testing (WPPSI-IV or WISC-V)
• Feedback session and full written report with diagnosis (if applicable) and recommendations
Does my child need a cognitive assessment as part of the autism assessment?
No, but it’s recommended. Cognitive testing provides insight into your child’s learning style and support needs. It’s particularly useful if you’re considering school-based accommodations or NDIS access.
Can autism traits show up differently in girls?
Yes. Girls may be more likely to mask their differences and mimic others socially. They might not show obvious repetitive behaviours but may still struggle internally. Our assessments consider gendered presentations and masking behaviours.
What happens if my child doesn’t meet the criteria for autism?
If your child doesn’t meet full diagnostic criteria, the report will still offer insight into their social, sensory, and emotional needs. We’ll suggest helpful strategies and explore other possible explanations (e.g. anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties).
How much does an autism assessment cost?
Our Child & Teen Autism Assessment starts at $2,160.
An optional cognitive assessment can be added for $960.
Will this help with school or NDIS support?
Yes. If your child receives a diagnosis, the report can support school-based accommodations, applications for NDIS funding, and access to early intervention programs.
