Frequently Asked Questions
When should I consider psychology support as a parent?
Psychology support can be helpful if you are experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, or overwhelm in response to your role and experiences as a parent. A Psychologist can also support you if your child is having persistent behavioural or emotional concerns. If you are feeling unsure of your parenting choices or are struggling to navigate challenges or changes in your child’s life, a psychologist can provide guidance and strategies.
Who attends a parent psychology session?
Any parents and carers involved in the child’s life can attend and benefit from parenting sessions. Depending on a family’s circumstances, a parent/carer may attend independently or with another parent/carer. Divorced or separate parents may seek individual or shared parenting support.
The child is not typically present at parenting sessions as this provides an opportunity to have an adult conversation that is open and un-interrupted. Felicity may organise parent-child sessions to better understand your relationship, current concerns, develop goals, and implement strategies.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is private, although there are exceptions such as when there is risk of harm to yourself or others. Felicity will discuss confidentiality during the first session.
What can I expect during a parenting session?
Parenting sessions are typically spent discussing your current concerns, specific challenges you face as a parent, reflecting on your experiences as a parent, and learning new strategies and skills. You should expect open and non-judgemental discussion with a psychologist.
How can I prepare for a parenting session?
Consider writing down specific concerns, questions, or examples of challenges you are facing. This can help you to remember and communicate your needs more clearly.
